What is Depression?
In simple words depression is described as a condition in which a person not only thinks negatively but also indulge in fear and doubt. The feeling of anxiety may be due to external circumstances but sometimes it may be occurs due to health conditions like hormonal imbalance etc.
Definition according to medical science. Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a mental health condition marked by an overwhelming feeling of sadness, isolation and despair that affects how a person thinks, feels and functions. The condition may significantly interfere with a person’s daily life and may prompt thoughts of suicide. Depression isn’t the same as sadness, loneliness or grief caused by a challenging life experience, such as the death of a loved one.My personal Experience:
Here is my story. I belong to a middleclass family. My parents worked hard and did their best to educate us (me and my siblings). It was also difficult for them because we do not have a strong education back round. My mother had a strong desire that I and my siblings[HR1] must be well educated so that we would have a better life. We became more and more disturbed financially and we struggled hard to afford our expenses. After my High school I started to find a job. There were not enough jobs due to Global Economic Depression and I do not find a better job. Then a year later I took admission in a low level college and couldn’t afford an honours degree so I go for a two years degree which was not really expensive enough but I find a job after completing the degree but not good enough to solve all my problem. So I started becoming a little negative, frustrated and depressed all the time. I left job and stayed at home due to financial crisis. At that time, my siblings were studying. Then my parents decided to marry me.
My parents choose me a life partner and I was agreed and happy about their decision. I married to a nice person. He had a dynamic personality, perfectly fit for me. We were a lot of compatible to each other as well so we were happy to be together in the beginning but again I faced severe financial problems. That was the greatest of all the times and then I feel severe depression because I saw my parents struggling and now I was in the same situation.
I fight with my husband every day, almost on everything he said, for almost a year. I knew that he loves me and I knew that I cannot live without him still I was blaming him for all my problems and worries. Sometimes, I felt severe hatred for him and also for myself. I stop taking care of myself and didn’t comb my hair for weeks. There was always some negative thoughts were rattling around in my head and the thoughts was almost automatic and uncontrollable. I couldn’t focus on my daily work. Sometimes I started yelling on my husband and sometimes, I started crying without any reason.
One day I came to my parents’ home and tell them that I am feeling like I am crazy and I also starting imagining that there is something wrong and also trying to prove that whatever I am imagining is true.
My mother told me to stay calm. She told me to stay positive and advised me to improve my mental condition because it could be fatal for me. Yes, it could be! Because I thought of suicide almost every day, in those last three years of my married life.
Then I started thinking that I need to change something. I surf through the internet and was trying to get some guidance about it. Then I jumped into some stuff about be positive and positive affirmation and meditations. I start meditating and within a week, I started to feel better. When I go back home. My husband also feel a drastic change into my behaviour. I was now much more mindful and managed than ever before.
I will discuss about all the things I learned about depression and what should be our mind set to encounter all life problems and how to become a ninja against depression.
Reasons behind Depression
According to my personal experience it is basically all of our life experiences. Whatever we go through in our life and whatever has happened in our past will play a vital role on our mind set. When we are too much focussed on the bad past experiences or traumas like fraud, ridicule, failures, losing loved once, losing friends etc. we are basically hard wired to focus on negative events of our life and scarcity of everything good. This habit of remaining always ungrateful and pessimistic, leads us from bad to worse mental condition. We generally do not acknowledged the blessing of God or Universe. We do not stay content with what we have! We always stays unsatisfied and unhappy. If everyone focussed on the blessing and gifts of nature, universe or God, no will ever suffer this problem. I read something, when I was a kid that “There is always a good natural reason for everything”.
When a person struggles financially in most of his/her life at some point he get depressed and worried about his/her future. Most of the people who are not successful because they follows the trends, chases the high paying jobs etc. and indulged in the rat race. They follow every possible thing, to become successful, except their own heart. They do not choose what they love to do rather they choose what others wants them to choose. It is the most dangerous thing while choosing once career. They work for just money and they worked hard but money never works for them. So stay away from the rumours while choosing your career and be wise! Quit quickly if you choose someone else dream and you should stay away from pessimistic people because if a person is unsuccessful in his/her own life. He spread the idea that no one else will be successful in the life. You might encountered those who always says this job don’t worth enough and businesses flop. No one can do this!!! It’s hard etc. It is obvious that if you wants to live an easy life, you choose things that are hard because if you choose to do something easy your life become hard. The reason behind this is if you will do what other says it’s hard, you will be in less competition and you are more likely to be successful. The key to success in life is to do whatever you love to do. If you will do your job or business whatsoever, with passion, you will not easily give up and remain consistent then you will be successful in your life.
Another reason of getting depressed when you are in a complicated or bad relationship. It does not worth to carry a burden of a bad relationship and getting depressed every day. Letting go that person is better. If there is no love, respect, trust or dignity in a relationship then letting go that relationship is a better option. May be you do not deserve a bad person you deserve better! Think always like that. There are billions of people in this world and there may be a better option for you than an incompatible person.
You can use some affirmations that helps you to keep on the positive side that “I am beautiful/handsome. I deserve a better person”.
I have heard a saying it was something like “If you are not healthy then you are more likely to be sad or desperate”. Yes it’s true if life is a challenge for you from health aspect, than you more likely to face sudden mood shifts and feels unhappy all the time. Pain makes you feel miserable but always say to yourself that it’s curable. God sends cure before the disease! Every disease can be fought with dignity and courage.
One Motivational Story
Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942. He was the great scientist of 21st century. It was not wrong if he would be called as Einstein of 21st century. Hawking was not initially successful academically. With time, he began to show considerable aptitude for scientific subjects and, inspired by Tahta, decided to read mathematics at university. Hawking’s father advised him to study medicine, concerned that there were few jobs for mathematics graduates. He also wanted his son to attend University College, Oxford, his own alma mater. As it was not possible to read mathematics there at the time, Hawking decided to study physics and chemistry. Despite his headmaster’s advice to wait until the next year, Hawking was awarded a scholarship after taking the examinations in March 1959. After being diagnosed with motor neuron disease, Hawking fell into a depression — though his doctors advised that he continue with his studies, he felt there was little point. His disease progressed more slowly than doctors had predicted.Hawking had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neuron disease (MND; also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, “ALS”, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that results in the death of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which gradually paralyzed him over decades.
Hawking had experienced increasing clumsiness during his final year at Oxford, including a fall on some stairs and difficulties when rowing. The problems worsened, and his speech became slightly slurred and his family noticed the changes when he returned home for Christmas, and medical investigations were begun. The MND diagnosis came when Hawking was 21, in 1963. At the time, doctors gave him a life expectancy of two years. Despite of all the difficulties he did not give up or lose hope. He followed his passion.
· This was he brief life history reason behind writing about him is only that if a person so much severely disabled can do such miracles in his life. Without any hesitation and inferiority complex then why we could not stand against all the odds and fight and get ourselves up in the life. He will always be remembered not only for his work but also for his great courage and strong personality.
He did great miracles in his life. It is because he was not focused on what he lack, he was focused on his passion. Due to his positive attitude he not only spend his life with dignity and self-respect but also done such a hard work in his life that he will be recognized by the world for centuries.
If he would only get depressed in his life and only focused on what he do not have he will never be able to do, what he had done. The reason is that if you will remain unhappy, it will take you far away from your goal. It is the revealed secret that MAN IS THE CREATOR OF HIS DESTINY. He is the proof of this quantum physics theory, the law of attraction.
Law of attraction:
According to scientific studies, everything around us has energy. Our thoughts also emits energy. Whatever you thinks and believes, it creates your reality. Your sub-conscious mind work on what you truly believe from inside and make it happen into your life. Whatever you thinks and believes, it creates an energy and attracts the same thing or situation in your life. Whatsoever, you believes you can get it, you will get it. Positive thinking leads to better life and negative thoughts and believes will make your life worse. This is called Law of attraction. It is a vast topic so discuss it later. So, depression make your life miserable. It did not change anything but it makes your problems worse than ever before. One should always be mindful while worrying. It is one’s personal decision how to perceive everything if you always stays on the positive side. You will not only fight with the problems with courage but also avoid excessive problems in the future. One should decide how to think. For example one day my aunt told me about a girl, who was getting married in a week. She told me what a poor girl! Her mother in law died of cancer just after her engagement. She might be called as cursed girl in her in laws.
I listen to her for some time then I said “May be she is lucky enough for not having a Mother in law.”
My aunt started laughing heartily.
You should always pick the positive things when everything seems to be bad and unfortunate. Not let your mind to indulge in to negativity. So, you can also try to train yourself to think like that. If someone tried to tell you that everyone in this world is evil than tell him/her that evil attracts evil. If there is no job. Do a business. If you are knocked down by this saying that “you are a mother! You cannot do a job because there is no one to take care of your kids” then open a day care center and also take care of other women’s kids. If some told you that you are looking fat tell him/her that healthy is attractive. What I am trying to say that knocked down all the negative feeling, thoughts, emotion whether from inside or from outside and avoid spending time with pessimistic people.
How to say NO to Depression
Reality verses Realities:
“Reality lies only in present not the past, so live your present moment. It is the only way to be happy”
We generally believes that reality is a constant but it is not. I t is a constantly changing variable. Whatever is today’s reality is not tomorrow’s reality. The reality of tomorrow can be different and the reality no. 1 no longer exist. Whatever we go through in our life in the past, we are so focussed on the negative aspects of it that we keep on editing it and makes the past memories as a miserable story that might not be true. Then we start convincing ourselves that it’s THE REALITY of our life. The thing we do not know is, reality is not something that remain constant. It keep on changing. Every day is new, which rises a new hope in our lives. The tomorrow is gone so the new day comes to ask you to wake up and lift yourself up for a new life. If someone did something wrong in the past with you now that person is no more in your life. Then it is no longer about him/her. The chapter is closed and today you should focus on the people who loves you and cares about you because it’s your recent reality or reality no.2.
I heard a story of an elephant long ago. When the elephant was just a calf. It was captured and sold. His master tied it with a strong rope so that he could not escape. It tried hard for some days and then realized that It will never be able to unleash itself. When it became big and strong, It remain tied to the same rope thinking that the rope is strong and it could not unleash itself. I heard this story long ago. I heard this story several times but no one of us realize deep down in our heart that we are also behaves like the elephant……. We have potential, to do whatever we want but we are grasped tightly in to the idea that our weaknesses in our past is our reality. We do not realize the time has changed. The past is over.
We do not live today. When someone is going through most difficult times of their lives. They become most pessimistic. They shut themselves off for everything and everyone. They start imagining that the world is full of bad people and there is no good remained in this world. Everyone around is an enemy These kind of thoughts are always automatic and uncontrollable and everyone thinks that whatever he is thinking right and completely correct but it is just our pessimistic old thought patterns which are almost hardwired.
During our day we starts overthinking about our problems or issues in our relationships. You should be focus on today and today’s reality. Today you are only surrounded by the people whom you love and loved. Today you are doing well in your career and you will better in coming future. Today you have a better health condition than the past your disease is curing. This is the truth and your ultimate reality.
Our whole life is comprised of today. Whatever you do today will become your fast and ultimately you shift into another today which is your future. The most dangerous thing about depression is people suffering it will forget about today and important tasks one should do today, which makes their past a sad story and ruins their future.
If you invest something today or you work smart today. This today’s reality will makes your tomorrow’s reality. Your success and failure is also depends only on your today. If you lose an opportunity today and spend these precious today in ignorance lost your most fruitful years, in uncertainties, insecurities, fears and worrying without any reason, you will ruin your future and yet another reality is that no one is your enemy but you are yourself.
So, please create better realities for yourself and people around you because your future also decides the future of the people around you. Be mindful while creating your reality by creating your future.
It is the mental presence of the person in today when you are focussed in today it is called mindfulness or you can call it consciousness. It’s is really sad fact that most of the people in this world spends 80% of their time thinking about the past or worrying about the future. They spend a small time at the present moment. This factor lead them to uncontended life. This is the main reason and the greatest factor. We should live our present, realize and show gratitude towards your present condition. Mindfulness is important.
Once you realize that you wants to create your better today. Now you should be mindful. First of all, what we call mindfulness is that we completely live in present moments completely and entirely focus on today’s task. That also includes planning for the future and your whether you want to invest or arranged a meeting you should be mindful of today. Make your everyday better than yesterday. Do not let your tasks pending because this today will never come back.
To become more mindful in today, you should quiet your inner voices that always rattles around in your head all the time. The negative thoughts and patterns will keeps on bothering you in the beginning but you should be mindful to avoid these thoughts. Training your mind that whenever such a thought comes in your mind, you are aware that is just a habitual trait of your brain and discard that thought immediately. You should be mindful that your crazy brain in promoting a negative thought and you do not accept it. After taking few minute, asking your mind to behave yourself, get back to your daily tasks.
To improve your mindfulness, you should also take help from meditation and self-help material available on internet. Enjoy today completely with your friends and family. Take some time to take care of yourself and also pamper yourself. It will makes you happy and content with yourself and you start to love yourself also.
There is another way or trick to control your thoughts or to quiet the inner pessimistic voices. When you feels that your mind is getting uncontrollable. Start thinking that what is my mind’s thinking? What is my mind’s thinking patterns. It will think absurd things for a while then it start getting slowing down and finally it will stop. You can do it while you are doing yoga or meditation. Then you will soon find the inner peace.
More you remain mindful and never indulge in to the negative thinking. It is likely that you will encounter your depression quickly and more easily.
Technology and Depression:
Technology plays a great role in spreading depression. Excessive use of social media and surfing on internet or watching television for hours plays an important role. All these technologies are handled by human beings like us who always focused on negative aspects of every matter. The news channel never have any good news for the viewers because according to them, Good news is not a news. If you wants to live a happy life, use these technologies and not let these technologies use you. Do not sacrifice your sleep for using it.
Never indulge yourself in these technology so much that it will kill your sleep and your comfort also. If you spend too much time on surfing through social websites it will waste your precious time and you will spoil your today and if you waste time watching television it will not only waste your time but also makes your brain more like to get depressed due to bad news. Killings, bomb blasts, rapes and corruption, there is no good news on television. It’s my personal experience, once you stop watching television, you will get peace of mind and mindfulness easily.
The main question is how to use technology for your betterment. Yes, you can you the same technology for your betterment. Record some good affirmation in your own voice and play these recording while getting to bed and before getting to sleep and inculcate the positive thinking patterns into your mind. There are three advantages of self-hypnosis against depression.
1. You will sleep better
2. You will automatically start thinking positively
3. You takes positive action after hypnotized
There are a lot of good self-help material available. Sometimes you get it for free and sometimes they ask for a small price but to make your mind positive and getting rid of old thoughts patterns and feelings it’s priceless. When you get rid of these negative vibes and shows positive and gratitude towards you and your life, Your life will become automatically better and you will easily shifts to a better reality as we discussed earlier that reality does not always remains the same.
According to scientists, everything in our lives is the result of our thoughts. Our thoughts reflects back, like incidents, habits, believes even luck or karma whatever we call it. Everything is connected deep down in our mind, this area of our brain can neither can be reached nor can we collect information from it. Our whole life is stored in it. This part is called unconscious mind or sub-conscious mind.
There are three scientific way to inculcate or to put the idea in one’s mind. If a person say something repeatedly several times before sleep. If a person is happy, and if a person strongly believes one thing to be true. The human sub-conscious mind will process that information and the results you can see in your own life. All of us experience sometimes that we are saying something that comes true right after that moment, sometimes it hardly takes minutes to belief or desire come true. Religious people call it THE MOMENT. The moment where God listens to your voice and your wish come true. The Science did not say any different. The science not only explains it as A LAW OF ATTRACTION but also gives us the techniques that we can change all the moments of our life as THE MOMENT.
Sometimes we heard the saying that think before you WISH. It’s true. One might ask for something that is not good for oneself.
Rules of creating positive affirmations:
· The sentence should comprise of all positive words.
· There must not be words like no, not, never, cannot, do not, impossible, the words like spoil, waste, etc.
· It is important that sentences should be small and strong.
· The sentence should be believable and practical.
· Always use present tense
For instance, write affirmation like “I am abundant, I am creative, I am happy and content, I deserve to be happy and successful, I am successful. I am healthy and active” but do not use affirmations like this. “I am not ill anymore” the reason behind it, our sub-conscious mind do not understands the negative words so it will interpret as “I am ill anymore” and start to reflect into your life, which is not actually good. You can create your own affirmations but you can also search for the affirmations.
Affirmations can be used in present continuous tense. For instance “My height is increasing day by day”. This affirmation I personally used. It was really effective. Whenever I was extremely happy, I felt that my height is increasing. Yes, Happiness is the main factor, whatever you want to attract in to your life. You must live a happy life.
According to my personal experience you can only manifest your future when your mind and your heart agrees on a single point even if for a second, you will definitely get the result instantly.
Most of the people tries too hard to manifest the positive affirmations for years but never realizes that I is really important to believe and to take your heart agree to your mind just for some seconds.
Meditation and Exercise:
Once you decide to help yourself so you should be willing to change your old habits and start a new and updated life. Always awake early in the morning and first do exercise or yoga and stay at the quiet place for some time and try to avail the peace of mind. Relax yourself and quiet your mind for some time. Do all this activity in a quiet and airy place. During this process take deep breaths, inhale through your nose and exhale from your mouth. After doing a little meditation start thinking about all the good things that the God or Universe has blessed you with. Show some thankfulness and gratitude towards all the blessings you have. It’s better that you take an oath to yourself that “No matter what, I will stay positive today and I will definitely do something that I avoid doing in the past and I will not procrastinate any task. I will also give myself proper time and take care of myself. I will live today completely and happily.”
This oath will help you to remember you targets of today. This will enhance not only your productivity but also you will be soon creative enough with your work or job. If you wants to improve your mindfulness and creativity, try to write with the hand which you never used before. Or if you use the hand you seldom you in your daily routine. Your brain will find the new patterns and paths of neurons and you will begin to be more productive and creative.
If it also do not work and you feel anxious or depressed there is also a way to get a relief. Take a bath and change your cloths. Select the dress that you love to wear. Make yourself up even if you have no intention to go out. Wear a nice fragrance. When you give time to yourself, you automatically feels satisfied. Do not let yourself get drowned in the flood of sadness and anxiety. Control your mind. It’s a great saying that “your mind is a great servant but a bad master”
So, get the starring of your mind in your own hand. The only way to live freely and completely, is to live with a controlled mind. Do not let your mind control your temperament as well as your life. The mind is an unleashed bull, if you do not leashed it and control it, it will spoil everything around you. Just remember all these things meditation and exercise will make your mind calm and relaxed. Always correct yourself, whenever you think something, make a better version of yourself by rectify yourself other than keeping an eye on others. Keep an eye on your thoughts.
Forgiveness and Letting go:
It is essential to live a normal life that one should know how to forgive others and hence themselves for the past. Letting go the past is essential to live in present completely, if you are so focused on whatever happened in the past, you will never be able to take wise decisions for the future. Everybody knows that HOW TO FORGIVE OTHERS but No one knows to forgive one selves for ones decisions in the past. This is the thing that a few people is aware of. If you have the idea how to forgive yourself for your past life. You realize the importance of learning from your mistakes you will lead a happy and content life. Everyone can control today and tomorrow by their better decisions today but no one can change or alter one’s past. So, it’s not an intelligent decision to scold ourselves for all our problems within our minds. When we don’t forgive ourselves we are constantly feels pain. The pain of failure, regrets of the past incidents, sometimes feels pity for ourselves. That is also the greatest times of our lives when we choose all bad things for ourselves because we were so convinced that we deserves the worst things in our life. From our wardrobe to our life partner. We take desperate decision which again makes our conditions worse.
When I was depressed I used to think like, I am suffering because of my own bad decisions. I deserve this life, In fact I deserve a worse life than this. I don’t deserve any good. I am incapable of doing any good. I am a bad person that is why God don’t listen to my prayers. Every one of us does the same thing. Just because we don’t forgive ourselves and don’t let go the past.
Letting go the past that whatever had happened was over. Now it’s time to make corrections into ourselves, our behavior and whatever was done, will not repeat it in the future. Learning from mistakes is important but letting go the past is also crucial to defeat the depression. Depression is something that will remain stick to yourself until and unless you let it go.
Depression will eat you up from inside if you don’t forgive yourself and others. The best way to letting go the depression is letting go your past.
Our diet plays an important role over our health, physically and mentally. It provides us strength, flexibility and growth. Your food will eventually become the part of your body. Your food become the part of your blood within some hours, became the part of your skin in 10 days, became the part of your muscles in almost 1 or 2 years, become the part of your bones in ten years. Our Health depends on what we choose to eat.
More you eat fresh vegetables and fruits, your skin glows and more you feels active and light. The more you use buttery and oils foods like junk foods, we will feels the heaviness and more often you feels dullness, boredom and sadness. You seized to remain active. The people who are not mindful while they eat, often feels the boredom because they don’t like to do their tasks given or doing job responsibilities because of heaviness.
If you are suffering depression, you should change your diet also. Use more fruits and vegetables, which provides vitamins and essential minerals to your body but also lightens you, due to quick digestion. The use of salad is essential because it helps digestion without making excess methane gas into your body. The red meat is difficult to digest when cooked in a buttery gravy, it was difficult to digest hence produces more gas into your stomach. When someone go to bed while eating the heavy food, it not only increases their blood pressure but also the gas will each the brain and causes hallucination (imaging things that don’t exists). That is also the cause of laziness, boredom and unhappy life.
In simple words hallucination is described as the seeing or feeling something that really don’t exists. When it got worse you might see the people who are dead or may be the people who don’t exist. Sometimes imaginary friends or might be enemies bothers a person suffering from hallucinations.
The gastric trouble not only makes the obesity problem but also hallucinations, most of the thoughts are negative while you are
Going through depression. Hallucinations makes the problem worse than ever. The more you eat healthy food, the more you get your mental health back to normal.
If you are already working somewhere then its alright but if you are not in any or some healthy and productive activity then you should indulge yourself in some kind of good activities. Join some welfare organization, helping others, etc. if you can’t do all these things than you should go for reading. Reading good quality books will be most effective thing while you are depressed, reading some inspirational stories will be effective. Reading makes you see the bigger picture of this world, people, and places. When you read the others and their point of views that not only makes you wiser but helps you to stay positive all the time.
This is my personal hobby. I used to read books. This hobby become more easy and effective after the availability of e-books. Whenever I am lonely or free I used to get the e-book, even if I don’t want to sleep at night, I used to read or even listen to an e-books. The technology makes it easier to read a book. You can choose the books of your personal interest and also you can read about something that you wants to do in life. That improves your knowledge about that field of life. You can also read about some skill that you are interested in.
It is the book who taught man’s everything that he need to know. There is no one today who don’t know the importance of books and importance of gaining knowledge out of it. Books not only provides knowledge but also enhance the wisdom and insight in a person.
When I read some good stuff, it makes me enlightened and I am sure that you also feels the same. I read somewhere that “Books are man’s best friends”. Reading more often when you are free, is the best thing. This time should not be spend over thinking of the life stuff, means remembering the past or worrying about the future.
Maintain a Diary:
It better to keep up and remain on the positive side, it’s better that one should maintain a diary. When you start sharing your thoughts with your dairy. You will soon know that where are you wrong? Where should you think again? While you read and re-read, you create a sense of understanding that where you should have to change your perspective? So, you no longer need a person to correct yourself.
Another advantage of maintaining a diary that when you write daily routine, it will be easy for you to let it go. You will feel that you have shared your feelings with someone and you seized to think the stuff again and again that makes you depressed.
Yes, I am suggesting that write all your crazy thoughts into a paper and then read it. It may sounds funny in the beginning but soon you realize to let go the crazy feelings and emotions is a better. Your mind will find it that letting go all these thoughts are better option than sticking them around. It not really advisable to keep all this literary work with you. Sometimes the feelings are so much ridiculous that you can also burn them off. It’s a better option to write it on blank paper and burn them off. Maintain your diary separately.
There is another advantage of maintaining a diary. When you write each and everything you become more managed in your daily life. You remember the task to be done and complete the tasks in time. You remember the details which you might forget with the period of time. It is suggestible to maintain a diary for your own good.
You can maintain a manual diary or can use a digital note, in your PC, Tablet or Android mobile phone. It’s up to your own personal choice and your life style.
The reason of writing this e-book is to explain to the readers that Depression is not because we are ill or something. it is due to our old thought patterns and pessimistic believes that our fate is written and can’t change it. Due to the believes that there is scarcity of everything good and unlimited availability of everything evil, is the basic reason behind anxiety and depression.
THERE ALWAYS BE A GOOD NATURAL REASON FOR EVERYTHING.
